This place kept popping up on vegan sites, Tripadvisor and recommended by locals for vegan food. It was also one of the only places open in the evening here. Time to see for ourselves!

The first thing we noticed, was the unclear opening hours. I rang ahead to ask if they were open & serving food, which they said yes to, but when we arrived they said they were only serving the snack menu, with just 4 options.

On arrival, we were kindly greeted and service was fast. We ordered the Tofu sandwich, Quinoa salad and nachos with guacamole and spicy dip. All delicious. Super filling and just the rightย size to share. Becauseย we missed out on the full menu, we opted to go for dinner again there the next evening!

East St. is a mix between a bar and a restaurant and has some of both. There is a wall covered with plants, a well stocked bar and some evenings they have live music! They are vegetarian-slash-vegan, so beware of the milk and cheese if you order. Most dishes can be made vegan easily. The portions are big, we could not eat it all.

Our evening meal was just as good as lunch the previous day. This is no Michelin star restaurant – but if you want delicious flavours, and some great vegan food, it’s definitely worth the visit! We had mushrooms, vegetable tempura, falafel burger and spicy bean tortilla! Mmmmmm!

Pay special attention to the wine list, they serve great local vegan wines!

We paid them another visit before leaving Nelson, for breakfast this time, and enjoyed this delicious baked banana, with granola and chia almond milk concoction. We also had to try the beetroot latte – which was surprisingly delicious!

All in all, East St. is a must-go if you are in Nelson, for breakfast, lunch, coffee and dinner, but do check their opening times as they close when it’s a slow night.
